Israel Aircraft Attack Hamas Targets After Rocket Fired From Gaza

Israel Aircraft Attack Hamas Targets After Rocket Fired From Gaza

GAZA, Palestinian Territories: Israeli aircraft carried out a series of strikes in Gaza on Monday, wounding two people, health officials and witnesses said, after a rocket fired from the Palestinian territory struck southern Israel.
Witnesses said the aircraft attacked four security positions belonging to Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs the Gaza Strip, and that the two people hurt were passers-by.
The Israeli military said that earlier a rocket fired from the enclave landed in an open area in southern Israel, causing no casualties. It had no immediate comment on the air strikes.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the Palestinian rocket fire. Israel has said that Hamas bears overall responsibility for what happens in the territory.
The group has observed a de-facto cease-fire with Israel since a 2014 war but small armed cells of Jihadist Salafis have continued to occasionally launch rockets at Israel. When those attacks occur, Hamas usually orders its fighters to vacate potential targets for Israeli retaliation. (Reporting by Nidal Al-Mughrabi-Arab News
Libyan ‘Hell’ Driving New Migrant Surge

Libyan ‘Hell’ Driving New Migrant Surge

ROME: Nightmarish conditions in Libya are helping to drive a surge in the numbers of migrants attempting to reach Italy in the depths of winter, humanitarian officials and asylum seekers say.
European efforts to close the route are also thought to lie behind a 30 to 40 percent increase in the number of mainly African migrants who have landed at Italian ports in the first two months of this year, compared to the same period in 2015 and 2016.
More than 2,700 people have been rescued in recent days, including a newborn delivered on a Norwegian police vessel.
The latest arrivals will lift the total for January and February above 12,000.
The number of deaths has also spiked: survivor testimonies point to 350 so far this year, compared to around 100 in the same period of last year, according to the UN.
The dangers of winter crossings were underlined in February 2015 when four rubber dinghies packed with migrants were caught in a storm that was to claim some 330 lives, including many who who froze to death and 20 who perished in the course of a what rescuers described as a hellish salvage operation.
“The increase in arrivals is probably due to living conditions in Libya becoming ever more dangerous,” said Flavio Di Giacomo, spokesman for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), one of the agencies that helps migrants on their arrival in Italy.
Sairon Kamara, one of the people rescued last week, described the brutality of the traffickers who organize the migrants’ journeys.
“The people would beat us every day and hang us (upside down) with rope,” Kamara told an AFP reporter on board the Golfo Azzurro, a rescue boat operated by Spanish charity Proactiva Open Arms.
“It was not easy, every day people are dying. Every day, people die.”
Another Guinean, Bari Mamadu, described how the smugglers would force migrants to call their families to ask for more money.
“When you dial the number, they hit you so your parents will hear you screaming ... there are five people hitting you with thick piping, hitting, hitting until you faint.”
Griselle, from Guinea-Bissau, said he had seen 15 people die from the blows, or as a result of being deprived of food and water.
“Libya is hell,” he said. “They treat us like goods that can be bought and sold.”
Last week, the corpses of 13 Africans were found suffocated in a container they had been locked in for four days prior to a planned departure.
Not all those leaving Libya had come to the North African state with the firm intention of trying to travel on to Europe.
A group of 75 Bangladeshis rescued last week said they had worked in the country for four years before deciding it had become too unsafe to stay amid ongoing violence between warring factions.
At the same time, the traffickers are using European moves to block their trade as an enticement to persuade would-be migrants to book their passage as soon as possible.
Earlier this month, Italy and Libya signed an EU-backed memorandum of understanding under which Italy’s coast guard will help train and equip its Libyan equivalent to make it more effective in stopping boats.
“The traffickers say it will be the Libyans doing the rescue operations in a couple of months and bringing everyone back to Libya,” said the IOM’s Di Giacamo.
“That’s the last thing most of the migrants want so they think they have to hurry up and leave.”-Arab News
Iraq Forces Reach Key Mosul Bridge

Iraq Forces Reach Key Mosul Bridge

SOUTH OF MOSUL: Iraqi forces battling Daesh in west Mosul reached the city’s southernmost bridge Monday, a key step in efforts to defeat the terrorists in their stronghold, a spokesman said.
The move, a little more than a week into a major push on Mosul’s west bank, could allow Iraqi forces to extend a floating bridge between the city’s two halves and pile pressure on the radicals.
“The Rapid Response force and the federal police have liberated Jawsaq neighborhood and now control the western end of the fourth bridge,” Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool told AFP.
The spokesman for the Joint Operations Command was referring to the southernmost of five bridges — all of which are damaged and unusable — across the Tigris River that divides the northern Iraqi city.
“That means the bridge is under control on both sides,” said Rasool.
Government forces retook the east bank from Daesh a month ago, completing a key phase in an offensive on Mosul that began on Oct. 17 and has involved tens of thousands of fighters.
Engineering units will be expected to deploy a so-called “ribbon bridge” across the Tigris that will allow the connection of the western side’s active front lines to the already retaken east bank.
Rasool said that the Interior Ministry’s Rapid Response force had now fully retaken two neighborhoods on the west bank, while forces from the elite Counter-Terrorism Service have retaken another further west.
“The street fighting is intense, these are populated neighborhoods,” Rasool said. “But our forces are fighting deep in the west, the enemy is broken.”
Iraq forces were also retaking desert territory southwest of the city in order to further cut off Mosul from Daesh-held territory in Syria.
“In general, all the troops are moving forward as planned and doing so rapidly,” Staff Lt. Gen. Abdelamir Yarallah told AFP from Talul Al-Atshana, the highest point in the Nineveh province, of which Mosul is the capital.
The UN food agency said accounts by recently displaced people it was helping were very alarming.
“We are hearing from some families that food has drastically risen in price and is unaffordable. In extreme cases, people cannot access food at all,” the World Food Program’s Iraq chief Sally Haydock said.-Arab News

Saudi Arabia, Malaysia Take ‘Quantum Leap’ With New Agreements

Saudi Arabia, Malaysia Take ‘Quantum Leap’ With New Agreements

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia and Malaysia have signed four major agreements in Kuala Lumpur on Monday that will go a long way in cementing ties between the two countries.
King Salman and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, who held talks on a range of bilateral, regional and international issues, also witnessed the signing of the accords.
“During the summit talks, the two leaders reviewed bilateral relations and ways of enhancing them in various fields to serve the interests of the two countries and their peoples,” said a report published by the state-owned Saudi Press Agency (SPA) here Monday.
King Salman wrote: “I seize the opportunity of my visit to the palace of the prime minister of Malaysia to express my pride in what Malaysia has achieved in terms of progress as well as in terms of the development of relations between our two countries in all areas.
“I am looking forward that my visit to Malaysia results in a quantum leap in the course of relations between the two countries,” said the king.
The Kingdom also announced more scholarships for Malaysian students.
“The Saudi government will increase the number of scholarships for Malaysian students to study in the Kingdom next year,” said Zayed Al-Harithi, head of the cultural section at the Saudi Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. He said there are more than 100 Malaysian students studying in Saudi Arabia.
He said the decision to increase the scholarships was due to 300 applications received last year. “There were only 100 scholarships available for Malaysian students last year to study at Imam Mohammed bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh,” said Al-Harithi, adding that the Kingdom has many universities in which Malaysian students can attend.
Referring to the four agreements, whose signing was witnessed by King Salman, the SPA report said: “The first memorandum of understanding (MoU) inked Monday is related to cooperation in (the) trade and investment field, which was signed by Minister of State Ibrahim Al-Assaf and Malaysian Minister of Commerce and Industry Mustapa Mohamed.”
The second one includes cooperation in the field of labor and human resources. A joint working committee between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia will be formed to review the skills required by both countries, said Malaysian Human Resources Minister Richard R. Jaem. The third MoU will go a long way in boosting cooperation in scientific and education sectors.
The fourth MoU concerns cooperation between the SPA and the National News Agency of Malaysia. After signing the MoUs, Razak hosted a luncheon banquet in honor of King Salman.
On the sidelines
of the visit, several ministerial meetings took place. Dr. Adel Al-Toraifi met Malaysian Minister of Education Mahdzir Khalid at the ministry’s
headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
During the meeting, they discussed cultural affairs and Malaysia’s participation as a guest of honor in the Riyadh International Book Fair scheduled for March 7.
Al-Toraifi stressed the importance of cooperation in the field of education and culture. In another ministerial meeting, Al-Toraifi discussed different aspects of cooperation in the media sector with Malaysian Minister of Multimedia and Communications Saleh Keruak.-Arab News

King’s Asia Tour To Expand Trade Ties: Business Leaders

King’s Asia Tour To Expand Trade Ties: Business Leaders

RIYADH: Private sector and business leaders have expressed optimism over the visit of King Salman to Malaysia and other Asian countries.
The king’s visit is an opportunity to encourage joint action between the Kingdom and the visited Asian countries, and remove obstacles that may obstruct exchange of goods, investments, and technology transfer to the Kingdom, local media said.
Subhi Mohammed Al-Hashim, deputy chairman of the Saudi-Japanese Business Council, said the business community in the Kingdom will reap the fruits of global visits led by King Salman.
Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Ajlan, deputy chairman of the Saudi-Chinese Business Council, underscored the importance of the king’s visit to these Asian countries.
The visit comes at a delicate time and is expected to have a positive impact on bilateral relations between the Kingdom and these countries at economic, political, military and cultural levels, he said.
The king’s visit to China is expected to witness the signing of a series of agreements between the two countries in trade, industrial and military fields, he said.
The volume of the Kingdom’s exports to China and Japan ranged between 56-65 percent of the Kingdom’s total exports last year, he said.
Additionally, Indonesia and Malaysia are considered key partners to the Kingdom on issues related to the Islamic world, he said.
Abdulaziz bin Saad Al-Kiraidis, an investor, said the king’s visit to China is important in light of tremendous growth in the volume of trade between the two countries, from $100 million in 1990 to $75 billion in 2016. China remains the greatest trade partner to the Kingdom in light of its huge oil imports from the Kingdom, he said.
Mohammed Mustafa bin Mohammed Siddiq, former member of the Saudi-Malaysian Business Council, said the King’s Asian tour, notably the Malaysian visit, would serve the joint efforts of the private sector in the two countries. Meetings between businessmen will create more partnerships, thanks to the common understanding between the two leaderships in Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, he said.
Ahmed Al-Rajihi, chairman of the board of the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the king’s current visit to Malaysia will open new avenues for economic cooperation between the two countries in line with Vision 2030.
Fahad Al-Sulami, a member of the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the king’s Asian tour is the best means to remove any obstacles and create stimuli to increase the volume of trade exchange and expand the Kingdom’s exports.-Arab News

Jennifer Aniston's Oscars Dress Was Once Sported By Jennifer Lopez, Plus Many More Thigh-High Slits From the 'Vanity Fair' After-Party

Aniston's appearance at Sunday's Oscars gave people major flashbacks to Jolie's now infamous dress from the 2012 Academy Awards, and it's easy to see why: both women rocked sexy, notice-me LBDs from Versace and each totally slayed the leg slit game. (And, you know, there's the whole Brad Pitt thing that constantly gets these two compared to one another.)

The thing is, the two gowns didn't really look that much alike. In fact, if you truly must compare the Friends alum to another famous face, make it J. Lo. See, the "Ain't Your Mama" singer actually has worn the exact same dress before.
Lopez donned a slightly lower-cut version of the glitzy gown for a surprise appearance during ex-husband Marc Anthony's concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City last August.

The Jolie effect clearly has a lot of, well, leg to it. Five years after her iconic red carpet turn, the thigh-high slit was the biggest trend at Sunday's Vanity Fair Oscar party.

Along with Aniston, more than a dozen starlets rocked the look in widely varied versions. Among those lovely ladies was Janelle Monae, who looked fierce one of our favorite looks of the night, a pretty punk confection that featured a long-sleeved mesh bodice, voluptuous skirt and oversized studded belt.

Mariah Carey nearly spilled out of her patterned Philipp Plein frock.

Samuel L. Jackson Wants to Take the Title of Highest-Grossing Actor Back From Harrison Ford

The two actors have a friendly rivalry surrounding who is the highest-grossing actor of all time. Currently, Jackson is in the No. 2 position after being knocked off his throne early last year.

"Harrison is still ahead of me because of [Star Wars: The Force Awakens] last year," Jackson told DeGeneres. "I think my assistant told me I was maybe 150 million or so behind him, but I got a chance to grab him with either this movie [Kong: Skull Island] or [xXx: Return of Xander Cage] is doing really well in China, so I might catch him soon."

Since its release in December 2015, The Force Awakens has grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. But while Ford might be enjoying a comfortable lead right now, Jackson is determined to reclaim box office dominance.

"I had that title for about five years," Jackson said. "Then Harrison made one movie and caught me."

The 68-year-old film icon seems to be doing everything he can to push himself back into the No. 1 spot. He even admitted that, unlike most actors, he is frequently his own audience member.

"I love watching my movies," he said. "That's why I'm here. Back when I was doing theater in New York, I always wanted to see the play I was in with me in it, and that's impossible. So when I got a chance to do movies, it was like heaven."

Jackson's appearance on the show came right after Sunday's eventful Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. As DeGeneres has hosted the show before, she was curious to know how Kimmel's performance stood up to past shows.

"He's no Ellen DeGeneres, but he's alright," Jackson said diplomatically.

– BERNAMA

Isu Ciptaan Pembangkang Boleh Jejas Ekonomi Negara

Isu Ciptaan Pembangkang Boleh Jejas Ekonomi Negara

HULU SELANGOR 26 Feb.

Saran Perjelas Derma RM2.6 Bilion,Skandal Zaman Mahathir Bila Mahu Perjelaskan?

Saran Perjelas Derma RM2.6 Bilion,Skandal Zaman Mahathir Bila Mahu Perjelaskan?

BR1M Bukan Rasuah, Arab Saudi Turut Beri Bantuan Seumpamanya

BR1M Bukan Rasuah, Arab Saudi Turut Beri Bantuan Seumpamanya

KUALA LUMPUR, 27 Feb (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak berkata langkah kerajaan mewujudkan skim Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) bukan satu amalan rasuah seperti didakwa oleh bekas perdana menteri, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Hadir sama, Menteri Wilayah Persekutuan, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Ketua UMNO Bahagian Lembah Pantai, Datuk Seri Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin dan Presiden MyPPP, Tan Sri M.Kayveas.

"Harga minyak Arab Saudi naik 50 peratus. Kita riuh rendah kalau naik 20 hingga 50 sen pun," katanya.

Agong Gesa KL,Riyadh Bekerjasama Tangani Cabaran Dihadapi Umat Islam

Agong Gesa KL,Riyadh Bekerjasama Tangani Cabaran Dihadapi Umat Islam

Turut hadir bekas Perdana Menteri Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Meryl Streep Slams Karl Lagerfeld's Apology After Oscar Dress 'Lie': 'I Do Not Take This Lightly'

Meryl Streep Slams Karl Lagerfeld's Apology After Oscar Dress 'Lie': 'I Do Not Take This Lightly'

Meryl Streep does not accept Karl Lagerfeld's apology.

The Florence Foster Jenkins star slammed Lagerfeld's apology in a statement obtained by ET on Saturday, claiming that the designer "defamed" her in his original statement that she turned down a Chanel dress for Sunday's Academy Awards -- where she is nominated for her 20th Oscar -- because they wouldn't pay her to wear the gown.

Lagerfeld released a statement to Streep and WWD, the outlet that printed his first claims of Streep's Oscar dress denial, on Saturday morning, explaining the issue was a "misunderstanding."

"Chanel engaged in conversations with Ms. Streep's stylist, on her request, to design a dress for her to wear to the Academy Awards," Lagerfeld's statement read. "After an informal conversation, I misunderstood that Ms. Streep may have chosen another designer due to remuneration, which Ms. Streep's team has confirmed is not the case. I regret this controversy and wish Ms. Streep well with her 20th Academy Award nomination."
Though Lagerfeld may "regret this controversy," it's not all water under the bridge for Streep.

"In reference to Mr. Lagerfeld's 'statement,' there is no 'controversy': Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist, and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication," she said. "That publication printed this defamation, unchecked."

"Subsequently, the story was picked up globally, and continues, globally, to overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars, on the occasion of my record breaking 20th nomination, and to eclipse this honor in the eyes of the media, my colleagues and the audience. I do not take this lightly, and Mr. Lagerfeld's generic 'statement' of regret for this 'controversy' was not an apology," she continued. "He lied, they printed the lie, and I am still waiting."

Tracing The Path Of Terror Home

Tracing The Path Of Terror Home

The government has made clear its intention to make Thailand a Southeast Asian hub. Whether that means building a high-tech industry base or adopting leadership in aviation design, the idea of becoming a regional hub has been marketed with mass appeal.

However, the idea of the country as a "hub" does not necessarily denote a good thing.
Recent security reports have raised concerns about Thailand becoming a hub of another kind. Reports obtained by the Bangkok Post reveal that several criminal suspects in Thailand have potential links to fighters belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) and Al-Qaeda, the multinational militant organisation founded by Osama bin Laden.

The fear that follows is that Thailand could become a new hub -- a meeting point -- for terror groups transiting in the region.

A further security agency says that Thailand is also being used as a base for producing counterfeit passports. These passports can be used to more easily carry out a range of transnational crimes, from terrorism to human trafficking, as well as arms smuggling.

Suspicion about a "secret training base" near the border of Tak province's Mae Sot district also lingers. A foreign intelligence agency found several illegal activities to be taking place in the area, including bomb making.

The findings prompted a security team to travel to Mae Sot to investigate.
There, in an area between Myanmar town Myawaddy and Mae Sot district, investigators found a space being used as an ostensible training ground. The source did not elaborate on what led them to this impression, but it did lead the military to release a statement that it plans to launch a mission to "weed out" any militant activities seen as a threat to Thailand.

A series of suspicious incidents have drawn the government's attention to Mae Sot as a potential terrorist hotspot.

checking up and down: A Thai soldier examines a Myanmar migrant. Recently, in an area between Myanmar town Myawaddy and Mae Sot district, an unknown training ground was found. Photo: Patipat Janthong

Recently, 11 suspects were detained on accusations of stealing 885 guns from the Border Patrol Police Subdivision 24 in Udon Thani from 2007-11. They confessed that they had later sold the weapons to an armed group of Karen at the Mae Sot border.

Last week a security source reported that a man going by the name of Hayi Rasak was arrested on suspicion of working with the Arakan Army, an insurgent group from Myanmar. The suspect denied any accusations. His nationality was not disclosed.

Another recent arrest in Mae Sot involved three suspects, so far unnamed, who were found to be conducting passport forgery for Uighur and Rohingya customers. Both groups are Muslim minorities who have faced oppression by the Chinese and Myanmar governments respectively. They have engaged in violent battles to press for their political autonomy.

Other separate cases of fake passports have led some to speculate they were being used for what one source describes as "human trafficking and terrorism, including Isis movements in Thailand's three neighbouring countries".

Such counterfeit documents would enable people to carry out illegal activities with considerably more ease, said Immigration Bureau chief Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn Prousoontorn.

"Passport forgery involves, and is central to, all transnational crimes," he added.
While Rohingya constitute a large segment of illegal immigrants in Thailand, Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn says that their criminal records do not reveal any discernible links to Isis.

However, the same source mentioned that Thailand could indeed be a potential transit point for terrorists in the region. Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn said a Uighur man who was caught on security cameras during the ransacking of the Thai consulate in Istanbul in 2015 was later spotted in Mae Sot district.

The incident, involving protesters breaking into the consulate, was a reaction to the Thai government's decision to deport 109 Uighurs charged with illegal entry to Thailand and China. The same man who was seen in Mae Sot was believed to have tried to contact an arms dealer to buy weapons for a new attack, according to an initial investigation.

The increasing concerns over a future terrorist event has led the international community to enforce more regular inspections of foreigners who could be using Thailand as a place to "hide, hatch and coordinate secret plots as well as produce counterfeit passports", as one source describes.

Foreign nationals are the most common perpetrators in document forgery cases. Recently, such cases have included a high number of Pakistani nationals. According to security reports, many of these individuals were found to have connections with major terrorist networks.

Bureau chief Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn Prousoontorn.

Last month two Pakistani nationals -- Muhammad Masood and Jawaid Islam, also known as Sunny and Bobby -- were arrested by Thai police for alleged involvement in transnational crimes. The police said they had suspected links with the detained Al-Qaeda operative Atiq ur Rehman, a fellow Pakistani national, alongside other Algerian suspects. All individuals had been previously detained for making counterfeit documents serving Isis operations.

Another three Pakistani nationals -- Muhammad Nisar, Sunil Paul and Samuel Amran Gill -- were also arrested in Thailand and deported in October of last year. Immigration police said they had stayed illegally in the country, but according to security reports, airport authorities believed they were involved in "some criminal activities near the Thai border".

In July of last year, police arrested Pakistani Abdul Ghani Bohra, alias Babu Rafiq, an alleged drug trafficker and peddler in fake travel documents. Security reports cited an investigation that accused him of being an important contact point for document counterfeiting gangs. They further suspected he had links with two Pakistani and Algerian criminal suspects who supplied fake passports to the people behind the Madrid blast in 2004.

The March 11 bombing that killed 191 people on a commuter train was believed to be executed by the Al-Qaeda network.

Thailand has drawn in many foreign criminals, including Pakistanis, for geographical and economic reasons, Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn observed.

Thailand is located at the centre of Southeast Asia between four other countries. With its relatively low cost of living, it is an easy place for migrants to stay for long stretches of time.
Living in Thailand offers both the long visa stays and relaxed financial constraints to set up counterfeit passport businesses, said Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn.

For criminal cases involving foreign nationals, the Thai police must operate in tandem with the Immigration Bureau.

Further complicating these legal dealings is the fact that many foreign nationals from developing countries tend to apply for refugee status at the UN High Commission for Refugees, granting them more coverage from authorities.

Alongside Iraqi and Iranian nationals, Pakistanis are under close watch by authorities as they are among the most common people behind the forging of passports for criminals, Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn noted.

New technologies have made it harder to use counterfeit passports, but several gangs have turned to simply using "real passports" for their customers. This means they use real passports featuring a photo of someone with a strong resemblance to their customers, instead of relying on fake books.
A further strategy fake passport holders use to avoid inspection is they often arrive at passport control counters near boarding time.

Officers are thus more reluctant to inspect their documents thoroughly, being saddled with time constraints.

"Arriving last minute is a way to put pressure on officers," Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn said.
Furthermore, if an officer bars an innocent passenger from travelling, damages can follow.
The Immigration Bureau has been tasked with determining the connection -- if there is any -- between these disparate cases and seeing if they all add up to something bigger like a terror plot that can be traced back to Isis.

"Only soldiers know this secret," said Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn.Bangkok Post

Govt 'sorry' over man's suicide over S44

Govt 'sorry' over man's suicide over S44

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and the government have expressed their condolences over the death of an elderly man who hanged himself on Saturday night after climbing a telephone signal tower to demand the lifting of the Section 44 order to control Wat Phra Dhammakaya.

"The prime minister and the government would like to extended condolences to the man's family," government spokesman Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said on Sunday.

He said authorities had tried their best to talk to the man and were preparing to save his life, but were not successful. He described what happened as "force majeure".

"This should serve as an admonition to society, particularly supporters of Wat Phra Dhammakaya, both monks and disciples, that they should not have allowed this to happened," he said.
"They should not use the faithfulness of innocent people to protect a handful of wrongdoers. In the end, they came out to say the man was not a disciple of the temple.

"Moreover, the order under Section 44 should not be taken as a cause for the man's death. What is happening to Wat Phra Dhammakaya is about a wrongdoer who has not only refused to accept the legal consequences but also turned to take an advantage of other people and resorted to using mob rule to avoid the law.

"Concerning this matter, the authorities have to enforce the law otherwise they can be seen as being neglectful of their duty."

Witnesses told the media that at about 4pm on Saturday the man, who has not yet been identified, walked from the Khlong Luang market with a piece of cardboard to the telephone signal tower. He took off his shoes and climbed up the tower.

After going up about 30 metres, he showed a message written on the cardboard demanding the revocation of the order under Section 44 by 9pm, otherwise he would then be dead.
A number of monks from temples affiliated to Wat Phra Dhammakaya tried to talk the man into climbing down. At the same time, rescuers from the Ruam Katanyu and Por Teck Tung foundations laid down air cushions on the ground, in case he decided to jump.

At about 9pm, the man tied a rope around his neck, and hanged himself by dropping down about five metres from where he stood. Rescuers rushed up the tower in a bid to save the man.

They finally managed to cut the rope, get hold of the man and bring him down to the ground about 30 minutes later, but he was already dead.-Bangkok Post

Libyan govt secures truce after Tripoli clashes

Libyan govt secures truce after Tripoli clashes

TRIPOLI: A cease-fire went into force early Saturday in the Libyan capital after two days of fighting between rival gunmen injured nine people and forced residents to cower indoors, the government said.
The fighting between two rival armed groups in eastern Tripoli erupted on Thursday after one accused the other of kidnapping four of its members, the Tripoli-based news agency LANA reported. It said families trapped in the conflict zone of Abu Slim appealed to the authorities to intervene to halt the violence, which closed down the city center.
The UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) said it had brokered a cease-fire between the two groups, with help from town elders from Tarhuna and Gharian south of Tripoli.
An agreement has been reached to set up three committees to follow up on the accord, the GNA said in a statement.
One committee will be tasked with enforcing the cease-fire, another consisting of Health Ministry officials will follow up the condition of those wounded and the third will assess damage, the statement said.
The Libyan Red Crescent on Friday said nine people had been injured in the fighting. There was no official casualty toll.
LANA said the fighting with heavy weapons in the center of Tripoli erupted Thursday and raged throughout the day. A truce was reached, but quickly collapsed and clashes continued on Friday.
Residents caught in the crossfire said their homes were shaken by the sound of exploding rockets, as columns of smoke rose from the zone of fighting while tanks and trucks mounted with heavy anti-aircraft guns moved in the zone.
“Two apartments in housing blocks on the airport road were hit by rockets. I can see columns of smoke,” local resident Nuria Al-Mosbahi said.
A convoy carrying GNA chief Fayez Al-Sarraj came under heavy gunfire near the Abu Slim sector on Monday, but he and other top officials with him survived unharmed.
Libya has been in chaos since the fall and killing of longtime dictator Muammar Qaddafi in a NATO-backed 2011 armed uprising.
Sarraj’s fragile GNA, formed under a UN-backed deal signed in late 2015, has struggled to impose its authority, particularly in eastern Libya where a rival administration holds sway.
UN envoy Martin Kobler has deplored the fighting and called, in an online statement, for “calm, dialogue and the protection of civilians.”

Suspek Rogol dan Samun Diburu Polis

Beluran: Polis meminta orang ramai menyalurkan maklumat sekiranya memiliki maklumat suspek lelaki berkaitan kes rogol dan samun yang disyaki melarikan diri di Kampung Nangoh, dekat sini, malam tadi.
