Chinese woman falls to death while taking photos

PHUKET - A Chinese tourist drowned after accidentally falling from a cliff off Kamala bay in Kathu district while taking photos with her friends on Thursday.

The 32-year-old from Liaoning, whose name was withheld, was swept by waves shortly after falling from the cliff into the sea at a villa in full view of her Chinese friends, said Pol Lt Yotsapat Suwannasit, investigation chief of Kamala police station. The incident was reported at 11.30am.

Police and rescue workers rushed to the scene. Life guards boarded jet-skis to search for the tourist, whose body was later retrieved about five nautical miles off the coast, Thai media reported.

Her bruised body was sent to Patong Hospital.

Her Chinese friends told police that their group, numbering 15, stayed at the villa in tambon Kamala. After having breakfast, the victim and three other friends went to take photos on rocks near the cliff in the compound of the villa. While taking photos, the victim accidentally fell off the cliff onto the rocks below and then into the sea. They tried to help, but failed.

A police investigation found that the Chinese friends of the victim arrived in Phuket island province on Tuesday. The victim came to join them a day later. They were scheduled to return on Friday before the incident occurred.-BANGKOK POST
